Introduction
I am Klaas Bylsma; I live in the Aylmer sector of the city of Gatineau in Quebec, Canada. This website reflects my interest in preserving in photos the many extant rural schoolhouses in eastern Ontario and western Quebec. My thoughts concerning the heritage value of such buildings and the concern to preserve them can be found in the attached text.
At this point, I have assembled a portfolio of over 200 schools. Some of the more interesting finds can be viewed in my Photo Album on this website. I invite your responses to this initiative in my guestbook; you can also correspond directly by email at kbylsma@sympatico.ca.
You are invited to view attached spreadsheets of all schools that I have recorded in photos. The historical county and township in which these schools are found are noted; if the school section (SS #) is known, it is also given. The names of the schools provided are sometimes the name by which the school was named informally; in other cases, I have arbitarily assigned a name based on the locality (village name, road name) where the school was found. If you know the school section or the correct informal name of the school, I would appreciate receiving this information. You may also be aware of listings or maps which show all former schools by the relevant townships. There are five spreadsheets based on the historical counties listed in alphabetical order; these are:
1. Carleton to Gatineau counties
2. Glengarry to Lanark counties
3. Lanark to Peel counties
4. Pontiac to Renfrew counties
5. Renfrew to York counties
